Tourism has emerged as one of the world's
largest industries
and a fast growing sector of the world economy; tourism
receipts account for over 10% of the world export of
goods and more than 34% of the world export of services.
WITC forecasts that, by the year 2010, global Travel
and Tourism will generate 2.48 Crores, Accounting for
6.5% of total employment worldwide. Tourism is one of
the most dynamic socio-economic sectors in India.
The country received over 30 lakh tourist in 2003. even
though India is one of the large countries in the world
having many outstanding and diverse historic, cultural
and natural based tourist attractions, the country received
only a small percentage of international tourist arrivals
- less than 0.4% of the world arrival. Domestic Tourism
also has much opportunity for growth and the economy
continues expanding and income rises.
Assam - The
Land of the Red River and Blue Hills has the potential
to become a truly world class destination. Located strategically
- " Gateway to The North east - Guwahati is poised
at the doorway between the rich Indian Hinterland and
South East Asia. Blessed with an ever smiling and educated
population with gracious charms the state has diverse
tourist attractions - 2 World Heritage Sites - Kaziranga
& Manas, One Horned Rhinocerous, Largest and smallest
populated Riverine Islands- Majuli and Umananda, Splendid
Cultural Heritage, spectacular art forms, Rang Ghar
- the seat of the Ahom Kings from which dynasty the
state derives its name. The culture and heritage of
the state is a huge melting pot of diverse cultures
of the South East Asian countries and the Indian Sub
continent. Hajo is possibly the only place in India
where a Mosque, Buddhist Stupa and Temple exist next
to wach other.
The
state has immense potential for expanding quality domestic
tourism and attracting more international tourists.
It is essential that tourism development in the state
is carefully and that it does not make the same mistakes
that other state have made. It is Essential the "
PARADISE UNEXPLORED" is developed carefully so
that it brings benefit without generating serious problems
and that the activity is sustainable over a span of
time.
However, the UNESCO World Heritage
Site - Kaziranga is one portion of the "PARADISE
EXPLORED" which has been opened to the world at
large. KAZIRANGA National Park is nestled between KARBI
ANLONG Hills on one side and River Brahmaputra Ashok
on the other. Though Kaziranga is being extensively
studied, several new specimens of animals are being
discovered specially in fauna and insects and in some
case even the reptilian/ amphibian worlds.
